Hey Friends! I’ve been on the road this week, so I haven’t been able to write as much as I’d like. I realized today that I hadn’t published a Five Photographers post in a while. Jess Dugan curated the last one in January, and it seemed like it was time to do this again. I’m lining up more guest curators this spring and look forward to sharing their work in the coming months. Please feel free to ping me if you want to work with me on something like this.
This, too: I’m celebrating a milestone this month: more than 36,000 people subscribe to FlakPhoto Digest, which feels like something to commemorate. I rebooted my newsletter in 2022 because I wanted to be less reliant on the whims of social media and the billionaire oligarchs who own these platforms. For the most part, it’s working out, and I’m grateful so many of you support the newsletter. Seriously.
I’ve been doing this work for over twenty years and writing a newsletter for ten, and I’m having more fun than ever. I have you to thank for that. So, I’m giving away a photography book to celebrate. You can read more about how that works below.
In the meantime, here are five photographers whose work has caught my eye lately. Please check them out when you have some time. Instead of linking to their Instagram feeds, I’m pointing to their websites. That should give you a more in-depth introduction to their work. I hope you find something you like. Thanks for looking!
Win this book!
I want to get to know you better, dear readers. Submission is FREE and easy.
Tell me about yourself in the comments for a chance to win. Where are you based? Are you a photographer? What are you working on? Be creative and have fun with this. I’m looking forward to hearing from you!
I'll draw one random winner from the comments on March 23, 2025.
Thanks again for reading FlakPhoto. I appreciate you!✌️📸
Located in Ames, Iowa. My recent work has taken me to Hartford, CT to lead a workshop on SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) Photography. The crazy part of it is that when you shoot electrons at an insect oftentimes the hairs or scales will move like they are in the wind. Very unnerving but cool. Just published a book on pumas and am working on a new photo book that uses microscope and macro photography!
Hello! I'm currently in Hamilton, ON, Canada. I've been making images of older buildings that are either slated for demolition or transitioning into something else (like part of a condo development). I'm printing these on cyanotype treated fabric, then cutting, stitching, bleaching, etc. Basically deconstructing these buildings which are about to be deconstructed or significantly altered. Thanks for all you do to promote photography!
