What a week!
No sooner had I gotten home from the National Geographic Storyteller’s Summit than I came down with a bug that nearly took me out. That’s an exaggeration, of course. I’ve endured worse illnesses in my day, but I haven’t been this sick in ages, and I’d forgotten what it was like to curl up into a ball with a 101-degree fever.
I spent the week in our upstairs guest bedroom watching YouTube and tearing through Susan Morrison’s Lorne Michaels biography. Suffice it to say, it’s not often that I read a 600-page book in five days. The week was exhausting and a reminder of the miracle that is our human body. What resilient things they are. I turned a corner yesterday afternoon and am finally starting to come out of the woods. Thank goodness.
What helped me get through the week was chatting with the many wonderful folks in our Substack chat group. They shared images and inspirations throughout the week, and it lifted my spirits to connect with so many kind, creative people — a reminder that social media isn’t all bad. I plan to relax this weekend and bookmark your many great movie suggestions. It sounds like I need to see Flow!
If you’re hanging out on the Substack app, please join us in the FlakPhoto chat. It’s a great group of artists, photographers, and writers. Feel free to introduce yourself in this thread:
One more thing…
“A picture is worth 1,000 words, but a soundscape is worth 1,000 pictures.”
This morning, I realized I hadn’t played any music since I got sick. That’s significant because I usually stream music all day long. Instead, I spent time reading, resting, and listening to the sounds outside my bedroom window. Reflecting on that, I was reminded of Masha Karpoukhina’s The Last of the Nightingales, a documentary about soundscape ecologist Bernie Krause. It’s a beautiful film; watch it when you have some time. I'm sure you will be moved by it.
Enjoy the day, friends! It’s chilly in Madison but may reach 28 degrees after a frigid week. I’ll return to my regular program soon. Take care!
Glad you are back on your feet!
Glad you're doing better!!! The flu is definitely going around. See you in the chat!
