I don't often discuss my day job.
Most people assume I do FlakPhoto for a living. Actually, I work for Outrider Foundation, a Madison-based 501c3 nonprofit that supports journalism and multimedia storytelling about nuclear threats and climate change. I wrote about Outrider last year; some of you might appreciate that post:
I love my work, and one of the gig's highlights is attending events like this: I spent Wednesday and Thursday last week in Washington, D.C., at the National Geographic Storytellers Summit. With everything going on in the country, the summit was inspiring and nourishing, precisely what I needed to remind myself about all the good happening in the world. It’s easy to lose sight of that sometimes. I’ve been focusing on keeping my mind on creative work. I hope you have, too.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion are currently under attack from the highest levels of power in the U.S., so I was genuinely moved by the global diversity of the program lineup. Although I have watched many foreign films, this was my first experience attending photography lectures delivered in other languages with onscreen English subtitles. Talk about refreshing!
Surrounding myself with so many artists, visual journalists, and people committed to telling the stories we need to hear lifted my spirits and gave me hope. The Storytellers Summit is a special event, and I'm grateful to have been a part of it again this year. It was terrific seeing so many old photography friends. Thanks again to everyone who said hello and the many new friends I made this week. Please stay in touch.
I thought you might appreciate learning about some of the photographers who presented their work this year. These folks were new to me and are just a handful of the many talented people I encountered in Washington, D.C., this week. Each is active on Instagram, so I’m including links to their websites and feeds. Do follow them if you like what you see. I hope you enjoy their work.
One more thing…
You can read more about our work at Outrider Foundation on our projects page. We also publish a newsletter, which you can subscribe to here.
Thanks for looking, friends. Have a good weekend. Take care!
Here's another, my cousin-in-law (Is that a thing??) https://www.ronandonovan.com/ @ronan_donovan
Nice to see something like Outrider here in Wisconsin! I subscribed immediately. I'll be reading your stuff out here on the west coast of the state. This is very motivating.
