Hey everybody, how was the weekend?
Summer is flying by, and it’s hard to believe August is nearly upon us. I just wanted to drop a quick line with some odds and ends that I woke up thinking about this morning. I’ll keep things brief so you can get on with your day. First, some local news…
Milwaukee-based photographer Jon Horvath will be in town to share his extraordinary photobook narrative, This is Bliss, at the Arts & Literature Laboratory on Saturday, August 3, at 2 p.m. I’m delighted to collaborate with my friends at PhotoMidwest and the Wisconsin Book Festival to bring you this free artist talk. Be sure to arrive early to see his print exhibition on the 2nd-floor mezzanine gallery. After the talk, Jon will sign copies of his book. If you’re in the area, I hope you’ll join us.
Last week, I wrote about my addiction to paper. This summer, I’ve been defragging my library and making a project of finding new homes for the books our house can’t contain. I occasionally leave photography books in our Little Free Library. (I like to think of our box as the Little FlakPhoto Book Library.) Let me know if you'd like to donate one of your photobooks, and I'll promote it on my social media. Cheers!
I’m excited to work with photographer Rashod Taylor on an exhibition project we’re launching in September. Rashod’s show will be part of the PhotoMidwest Festival Weekend we’re hosting in Madison from September 27-28, 2024. I hope you'll join us if you live near Wisconsin.
I’m programming a photography lecture series that weekend and still looking for photographers. If you live in the area and would be interested in speaking about your work, I want to hear from you. Please email me anytime. Thanks!
I wrote about the pleasures of garden photography earlier this month. Colin Pantall sent over this image, which blew my mind. This is not what I expected when I put out my call for garden pictures! I think you’ll agree it’s a stunner.
This is what I love about these open calls: I never know what I’m going to see. You always surprise me, folks, and I am forever grateful for that. I’m still looking for pictures of the garden to show here and on my Instagram. Would you show me yours?
Would you sponsor FlakPhoto?
Finally, I’m brainstorming and want to hear from you. I plan to organize more IRL photography events in Madison, which costs money, so I’m kicking around the idea of introducing curated photography ads here in the newsletter.
More than 29,000 photography people read FlakPhoto Digest, so it’s a valuable place to promote your projects. But I want to get it right without ruining the vibe with irrelevant clutter. What do you think? If you’re interested in sponsoring FlakPhoto, drop me a line.
Okay, that’s all for now. I hope each of you is well. Have a great week!
I’m in the Midwest but nowhere near Madison or I’d love to check it out!
