Just a short post today.
When I rebooted FlakPhoto Digest in 2022, I told you it would be an experiment. That’s been the case for the past year and a half, and based on the reader response, people don’t seem to mind my riffing in public. I’m developing a new feature for the newsletter, and I wanted to tease it here this week. It’s called Show & Tell and will be an interview series with photographers and artists.
I’ll invite guests to write about themselves and their work. But I want to dig deeper, beyond the usual questions about photography. I hope to learn about the people behind the camera and see how they connect the creative dots in their practice.
As photography’s shape continues expanding beyond mere documentation, it becomes clear that many artists weave inspirational threads across disciplines. Books and films influence an artist’s work as much as a previous generation of photographers. And music can inspire one’s creative mindset in unexpected ways. Naturally, these posts will include lots of pictures. Hopefully, the conversations will turn you on to a new photographer you might not have known about previously.
I love meeting creative people, so I’m looking forward to learning more about the photographers in our community. Since many of you are artists, I hope you’ll recommend someone I should interview. Please email me with your suggestions anytime. I’m excited about this new idea and hope you like it. The Show & Tell series will launch in a few weeks — stay tuned!
One more thing…
Mark Alice Durant has been doing fantastic work with Saint Lucy Books. He sent a copy of his new book, Summer of the White Fox, and After, which drops this month. I read it in a single sitting on Sunday morning after spending the previous day celebrating my father’s 77th birthday, which made it resonate even more.
I’m still processing the book and found it immensely affecting. Mark is a lyrical writer; his essays are moving meditations on photography, wonder, and mortality. I know some of you will appreciate this one. He’s speaking at the book’s launch event in Baltimore on May 13. Swing by if you can make it.
Thanks for sharing your book with me, Mark! It’s beautiful.
I am a subscriber in part because I really am curious about and value how you see things, so for me I'd rather you interview people instead of asking them to write about themselves.
Love the idea of the Show and Tell, Adam. Looking forward to seeing how that progresses :)
