A great man, a great photographer... a hopeless romantic! I attended his estate sale in Paris long after he passed and the family cleared the attic. There was a huge amount of material that was not 'the usual suspects'. It is our loss that we always see only the handful of 'great photographs' by a given photographer. Boubat had so many lovely images to his credit that we will never see in a book, or at a show!
I knew him slightly and acquired some of his work for the Art Institute of Chicago. One anecdote, the origin of which I can’t remember, may or may not be true - Later in his career Boubat took up drawing. One day standing in a doorway in Paris he started sketching after he was done he packed up and in strolling away noticed the hands and sketch pad of another draftsman just visible from another portal. There he found Cartier-Bresson at work who noticed him passing and said “Here we are the last of the great photojournalists.”
