A important reminder of the importance of awe in our lives and the way photography provides us an opportunity to experience it.

The one with the audience in the movie theater was interesting, you do not see people dressing up like that to go to the movies, a restaurant or an airport anymore. They even dressed up going to a football game. Not today, you see people with pajamas, gym shorts, etc walking into the store.

Great history on eclipses! And humans everywhere have the same fascination with celestial events. We were in the path of totality and it’s a breathtaking view.

Inspiring post, thanx.

I've been reflecting a lot on how powerful those few minutes of unity felt yesterday. Like, thousands of people across hundreds of towns, all gasping in collective wonderment at the same moment. The historical lens brings a whole new level. People have been uniting around the shared experience of the eclipse since - probably humans have been around. Powerful stuff.

Great selection of eclipse photos especially with people but others are exceptional too. I punched some holes in a piece of paper with a metal barbecue skewer when I discovered the holes in the salad spinner basket I planned to use to produce curved shadows didn’t work very well. Both produced irregular and somewhat blurry outlines of the moon shadow but lots of fun to try. Then I noticed tree shadows on my driveway were composed of curved elements and so snapped them too. Guess I’ll post on Igram to make a funky recird of the event in my front yard as I don’t take myself seriously there. But appreciate and “like” seeing your posts.

I don't think we could've asked for a better day to watch it weather-wise.

Thank you for this fantastic post. I especially enjoyed seeing the 1890 eclipse photograph by Watkins, but the entire article was so well done!!

Thanks for this, and all the great images. The eclipse is just now leaving Los Angeles. It's only 50% coverage here, which relieved me of any responsibility or guilt over trying to shoot it. Nice to just enjoy it!

Great read, and great photographs! I’m planning to watch the eclipse instead of photographing it, maybe snapping a shot or two of the change in the surroundings. In 2017 I photographed it, got my own version of a shot not unlike countless others, and kinda missed just staring in wonder. So I’m gonna focus on the wonder today.

You've outdone yourself...the essay, photos, article...brilliant.

The "gardener-king" is a fantastical bit of history.

I’ve been thinking the same thing - the childlike wonder of it all is my favorite part of events like today!
