A important reminder of the importance of awe in our lives and the way photography provides us an opportunity to experience it.

Indeed. Thanks for reading Ibarionex!

The one with the audience in the movie theater was interesting, you do not see people dressing up like that to go to the movies, a restaurant or an airport anymore. They even dressed up going to a football game. Not today, you see people with pajamas, gym shorts, etc walking into the store.

Great history on eclipses! And humans everywhere have the same fascination with celestial events. We were in the path of totality and it’s a breathtaking view.

Inspiring post, thanx.

Great selection of eclipse photos especially with people but others are exceptional too. I punched some holes in a piece of paper with a metal barbecue skewer when I discovered the holes in the salad spinner basket I planned to use to produce curved shadows didn’t work very well. Both produced irregular and somewhat blurry outlines of the moon shadow but lots of fun to try. Then I noticed tree shadows on my driveway were composed of curved elements and so snapped them too. Guess I’ll post on Igram to make a funky recird of the event in my front yard as I don’t take myself seriously there. But appreciate and “like” seeing your posts.

I don't think we could've asked for a better day to watch it weather-wise.

It's true — Gorgeous day. And such strange light!

I’ve never seen Watkins picture - that is amazing!

Right? Gorgeous picture!

Thank you for this fantastic post. I especially enjoyed seeing the 1890 eclipse photograph by Watkins, but the entire article was so well done!!

Thanks so much, Susan! I would love more people to see this. Please share with your friends. Take care!

Wonderful article, thanks for putting so much into this. Atget is one of my favorites.

Thanks for this, and all the great images. The eclipse is just now leaving Los Angeles. It's only 50% coverage here, which relieved me of any responsibility or guilt over trying to shoot it. Nice to just enjoy it!

Great read, and great photographs! I’m planning to watch the eclipse instead of photographing it, maybe snapping a shot or two of the change in the surroundings. In 2017 I photographed it, got my own version of a shot not unlike countless others, and kinda missed just staring in wonder. So I’m gonna focus on the wonder today.

Good plan. Have fun!

You've outdone yourself...the essay, photos, article...brilliant.

The "gardener-king" is a fantastical bit of history.

I’ve been thinking the same thing - the childlike wonder of it all is my favorite part of events like today!

Wonderful, Andy. Thanks for this. Am about to head out to meet my child and gather with others. Safe viewing and enjoy the wonder!

Ben McCanna took a great photo during the partial solar eclipse in Maine in 2017 - a classic I'll love forever
