If America celebrated its artists and creators with a tenth of the zeal with which it idolizes its billionaires, we'd live in an infinitely happier country.
Thanks for all this; the remembrance and the links especially. To paraphrase a previous comment, if Americans honored its documentary photographers a fraction of how they’re honored in Europe, we would be boundlessly more enriched.
What a fitting tribute, Andy. I had an opportunity to meet Mr. Tice during a presentation and book signing at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey. His stories and work were captivating, and he will definitely be missed. 🙏
Two great artists lost indeed! I've always been a huge fan of David Lynch, and having seen George Tice's "Petit’s Mobil Station, Cherry Hill, New Jersey, 1974" in person on several occasions, I can confidently say he was one of the true masters of large format photography and printing. His application of the Zone System is among the best I've seen. This image is so nuanced and full of shadow detail, it really must be seen in person to appreciate. I am fortunate to work in the University of Toledo's Center for the Visual Arts, adjacent to the Toledo Museum of Art, so I get to see gems like this, in person, on a regular basis. They have an amazing collection of photographs/ works on paper!
I’ve been away from school too long. I shouldn’t be flabbergasted by how much of my own work echoes a grand master I’d not been made familiar with. I will be fixing that latter flaw as soon as this NFL Playoff game is over because I can be a very shallow person sometimes. It’s a defense mechanism really.
Long before I was into photography, there was an album cover among my favorites. Years later I learned it was a photo by George Tice. Blue Rodeo… The Days in Between, 2000. Great album, stunning cover!
Thanks for this link which provided an in depth view o of Tice and his work some of which was new to me, expanded my view beyond the well known photos.

The poet laureate of New Jersey. RIP
I must admit I don't really know his work. Thanks for sharing as I'm looking forward to checking it out and the doc about him.

Thanks for sharing the documentary; it was interesting watching him use his camera, and the process of printing.
