Here’s something a little different.
I don’t usually write about personal projects here, but this one seems relevant to the things you’ve come to expect from me, so I hope you don’t mind. Years ago, I realized that curating the photographic Web was a fun and creative way for me to use the internet, and I’ve been recommending photography readables in various ways over the years — on the old FlakPhoto blog, in the FlakPhoto Network and on Twitter. I love sharing the inspiring stuff that comes across my desk, and I like helping folks discover something new.
One time, while describing FlakPhoto to a friend, I talked about how what I did was akin to her work in the radio business and explained that part of my work was like DJing a photography program, but instead of music, I was broadcasting images and ideas. I called myself a link jockey back then, which made her smile. That’s a funny way to put it, but it’s kind of true. What can I say? I love to share photography!
Last year, I started using Flipboard to collect the photo stories that caught my eye. It’s a handy app for bookmarking the stuff I want to read, and there’s a great community aspect to it, which is perfect for me. I wrote about my FlakPhoto Reads magazine earlier this year and promised to share a photography link round-up in the Digest from time to time. This summer, I’m doing a curatorial residency at Flipboard. Among other things, I’m writing a monthly newsletter roundup for the folks who enjoy photography over there. My first newsletter drops tonight, and I wanted to give you all a sneak peek since many of you love reading about pictures. You can check out this month’s mix below. I hope you find something you like. Enjoy!
I have not heard of Flipboard and will go and have a look! Thanks.
Thanks for doing this. Reading that and reading more here on substack is making me reconsider my social media choices. I am at the point where I want less, not more so I feel like I need to su substitute existing choices.
