Monday Muse: Andrea Modica
Ferns, fish, and Italian Stories
Years ago, I published a photoblog. Remember those? The premise was simple: a photo a day with some links to see more of that artist’s work. Instagram changed everything, so I’m trying something new: the Monday Muse, a visual inspiration for your email inbox. No algorithms, no ads. Just a picture to start your week. Would you like to show something of yours here? Please email anytime! —AA
When I first saw this picture, I noticed the fish. They are beautiful creatures, even in black and white. Soon after, though, my eyes were drawn to the ferns, my favorite plants — those ancient rippling shapes are stunning, aren’t they? Today, I glimpsed the summertime legs in the upper left corner. I was too busy ogling ferns and fish to see them the first few times I looked.
Photography is good like that: it rewards repeat viewings.
What exactly is happening here? It’s hard to say. But the mystery is what makes the picture work: it keeps us guessing. The image is by Andrea Modica, one of my favorite photographers. It’s part of Italian Story, her forthcoming book. I know many of you are fans of Andrea’s, so you’re probably already familiar with her work.
I can't wait to see this new book. You can pre-order a signed copy through April 21. When you have some time, visit Andrea’s website. There are loads of portfolios there, including her masterpiece, Treadwell.
Andrea is on Instagram, too. If that's your thing, you can follow her @andreamodica.photo. She's amazing.
Okay, that's all for today. Is there a photographer you think I should feature here? Please email me anytime. Thanks for looking, and have a great week!
