Long time no see! Did you miss me?
I'm back from vacation, rested, restored, recently injured, and ready to get back to work

To begin with, apologies for the radio silence.
I logged off for some much-needed R&R these past few weeks — I hope you didn’t think I ghosted you! The good news is that I’ve got some exciting things lined up for the fall, and I look forward to sharing them with you in the coming weeks. I figured it’s easier to talk than type. More about what I’ve been up to here:
I’m still making my way through my email inbox. I’ll leave you with some of the things that caught my eye (and ear) over the past few days. Enjoy!
Some of you might know Sasha Wolf’s great PhotoWork podcast. She runs the PhotoWork Foundation and launched a photography fellowship this fall. This is an excellent opportunity for early-career photographers. What have you got to lose? The application deadline is October 15, 2023.
I'm looking forward to this one: Erinn Springer's Dormant Season ships from Charcoal Books this fall. It's always exciting to see Wisconsin photographers getting their work out into the world, and Erinn is one of the state's finest imagemakers. (You can read more about her work in TNY.) I hope we can get her down to Madison to give a talk at some point. I think it's still in pre-order but shipping soon.
Of course, I’m a Stephen Shore fan! I know many of you are, too. Charlie Melcher interviewed Shore on the Future of Storytelling podcast the other day. This one’s still in my queue, and I look forward to spending time with it. Stream it here:
Josh Ethan Johnson sends word about a new film series he’s been developing: Wrong Side of the Lens premiered in New York on September 19, and it’s available to stream online now. If street photography is your thing, this one’s for you. Congrats, Josh!
Finally, I’m launching a FlakPhoto channel on IG. I plan to use this space to share periodic photography updates from FlakPhoto HQ — highlighting the cool stuff that comes across my desk week after week. I don't want to overwhelm you, so I'll roll things out slowly. (PS: it’s mobile-only on the Instagram app.) Check it out!
Okay, that's all for now. I hope each of you is staying happy and healthy. More soon!
Feel better soon! Let that ankle heal!
I listened to the pod! I loved the reference to trauma and the emphasis on a photographer’s job being a visual composer.
