It’s that time of the year!
Summertime: the livin' is easy, fish are jumpin', and the cotton is high. Here in Wisconsin, we cram a year of activities into the three months when the sun comes out, and we can be outside in t-shirts and bare feet. My point is that the summertime frenzy is upon us, and I’m adding two deadline reminders to the mix. Today’s post is a shorty, with some photo opportunities you don’t want to miss.
Last week, I published an essay by Hotshoe editor-in-chief Melissa DeWitt. The easter egg in Melissa’s post was a book giveaway of Todd Hido’s Hotshoe issue. We’re giving copies of Hotshoe Issue 210 to three lucky FlakPhoto readers this week. I’ll draw the winners on July 4, 2024. Tell us why print matters for a chance to win.
I wrote about the photography festival we’re organizing in Madison a few weeks ago. The centerpiece of our Festival Weekend is PhotoMidwest’s 13th Biennial Exhibition, which will be juried by artist, photographer, and curator Kris Graves. The deadline to submit is today, July 1, 2024. If you live in the Midwest, I hope you’ll consider applying. The show opens at ArtLitLab on September 17, 2024.
Finally, I’m still looking for Midwest photographers to feature in a group show and lecture series I’m curating. Please let me know if you’re interested in participating.
I love the picture at the top of today’s post. Terra Fondriest shared it with me a few weeks ago, and it truly conveys the ethereal charm of the summer season. If you aren’t yet familiar with her, please check out Terra’s website. She makes beautiful photography; I know you’ll appreciate her work.
It’s a short week here in the U.S., and the Independence Day holiday is arriving in a few days — I’ll be in touch after the break. That’s all for now. Take care!
Terra’s work is lovely. Almost etheral in some ways but solidly grounded in others. Thanks for calling attention to it.
I love that headline photo
