When I'm feeling the "what's the point of it all?!" I return to Northern Exposure and relish in a simpler time. It kneads the joy right back into the dough of life. The writing and outstanding characters of Cicely, Alaska help me to remember to trust in humanity and find community wherever you can.
Totally agree with the sentiments in Jillian’s note - your enthusiasm in bringing people together through photography makes a big difference for many of us. Really appreciate your thoughtful reflections about the state of image making during these unusual times.
I remember that show. Where do we find it these days?
As for winter… I loved it when I was young, but came to resent it as I got older. However, like you, I’ve recently been feeling a shift in my attitude. These last few really cold days have been sunny. That makes a difference. I’ve also made some changes in my personal life that have helped. In a few days the nights will get shorter and the days longer. Then it’s Christmas and New Year’s. Ironically, January is one of my favorite months. In the Twin Cities we have the Land O Lakes dog show, winter carnival, world snow sculpting championships, and the Art Shanty project coming up.
So much to look forward to, if you reframe and adjust your attitude. (Remind me of this next time I’m griping about the weather).
Indeed, it sounds like we are having similar experiences. Mind you, it's early in the season, and I might be singing a different tune come February, but for now I'm keeping my eyes open and embracing the cold. As for Northern Exposure, you can now stream all six seasons on Amazon Prime, complete with the original music. The episodes look and sound great. Check it out!
For February I am planning a road trip photography adventure. The general plan is to get on 35 and just drive south, stopping along the way. Knowing that February is a non issue makes the first 3 months of winter a lot more bearable.
after 54 years of "banging my head against the proverbial photographic wall", I have that same headache. Who care's ? Who see's your life's accomplishments? We don't learn from history. All those historic moments that I have collected are meaningless in today's world but I am compelled to continue. www.flipphotog.com
Ah, I like Bon Hiver, too! Yes, I've made my peace with, and try to use the winter to working my long-running Winterscape Gallery Series project. We got snow here in NJ today, so I'll be adding t that Gallery shortly!
I started appreciating winter more when I started horseback riding lessons five years ago. I ride in all weather. Then in 2024 I took up birding and photography. Winter plus birds make for amazing photos! I am always outside.
Northern exposure is my favorite as well-so good!

Absolutely lovely images and your essay has certainly hit that cozy winter spot. Continued thanks for all your work here on Substack.
Thank you, Amy! ❄️

Thank you, David. Happy holidays! 🎄❄️✨
Cecilia Blomdahl from Svalbard has increased my appreciation for winter and the people who live in extreme climates like Norway.

Are you familiar with the music of "Bon Iver?" Here's a pretty one! And . . . Bon Hiver!
