First of all: congratulations! :) Photographer by hobby. But it's ok this is not my job, so I could enjoy it freely. I like to take street photos. Live in Italy but like to travel. If you are curious, here you could find some of my pictures: https://www.doppiakappa.net

Yes, I am an artist, and I love color. I also love travel, esp. the (human) connection it brings. For now you can find me at PicturesTravels.org. This blog contains my travel writing and photography. Still finding a way to showcase my painting 😀. Some of it is on Instagram @annemiekekes. Connection is key.

Photographers don't have to commit to being an artist. That's what's nice about it.

Wow- congratulations on nearly 20 years of work on Flakphoto! Way to go! THAT is quite an accomplishment, and so glad you shared YOUR journey!

I smiled when I read the question - "Are you an artist?" I tell my students (I am an associate professor of art/photography at High Point University in NC) to OWN THE NAME ARTIST and embrace the journey!

My work is documentary in nature. I have been photographing vintage movie theaters for 43 years, driving to every town or city with an old theater, documenting over 1,150 individual theaters in all 50 states. Why theaters? My hometown movie theater was torn down two years after a painting with light project inside of the Carib in Clearwater, FL was completed for a photo school assignment. Clarence, the manager, used to announce, "Please remain standing for our national anthem" as he played a ragged short film of the Star-Spangled Banner. If a patron did not stand, he would stop the film (burning smell ensued) and turn on the house lights to embarrass them into standing. Hence, the name of my book, which is in preorder now, is "America's Hometown Movie Theaters: Please Remain Standing." (Baueranddean.com) I hope that the title also envokes that I want these theaters to remain standing, and to honor the important role that they hold, had or potentially could have again in their communities: a place to gather with neighbors, friends, and strangers to laugh, cry, be educated, and where it doesn't matter what your social status, politics, or regilion is, that it is enough to be together. You can also see some of the work that is in the book on my website: www.busybstudio.com.

Hi Andy,

I love your writings on photography. Wanted to share my collaboration on color - and the poet - Emily Dickinson, "This Earthen Door"... Leah Sobsey and I have reanimated Dickinson's herbarium book with anthotypes, which you probably know are plant-based photos. We grew 66 varieties in our gardens to replicate the 66 pages of her herbarium. Dickinson was actually known as a gardener during her lifetime, published only after her death... The work brings together science, art, and literature and is also a meditation on color. We have a show up now at Rick Wester Fine Art in Chelsea , NY through July, and one at the Brandywine Museum of Art outside Philly, until early September.

You can see some of the work here:

and our book here:

Thanks!

Warmly,

Hi Andy! I love this call to connect artists across the world :) thank you! I've always been a creative and while dance was my primary form for many years, I slowly became obsessed with photography, first as a hobby and now taking it more seriously as an artist, way of life and source of income. I'm now based in NYC but my diverse background having been born in South Africa and lived in Israel and South Korea has shaped me as a person as a result my art - like many here I photograph street and travel to continue to explore the world and freeze the very human moments that grab my eye. I share a weekly photo snippet here and @mooshtravels on instagram and https://www.etsy.com/shop/MooshTravelsStudio

Happy anniversary!

I've had a hard time calling myself an artist or even photographer, preferring to identify more as an enthusiast or amateur. But in the sense that I adore creating photos, as opposed to "snapping", it makes sense to be one.

I'm loving your approach to photography and community building. It's a breath of fresh air after spending a long time battling Instagram's algorithms.

Apparently Substack doesn't allow you to edit comments, or I would've put it in the original one.
